| Hello!
I am a backyard bbq'er. I am looking for a grill/cooker/smoker that will do it all if there is such an animal.
I would like one large enough to do a half hog. I cook some ribs and butts, but mostly steaks. I currently have a weber gas grill and wsm but these are very limited in size. I like gas because I can set it and forget it. I would like this grill/cooker/smoker to also use gas, wood and/or charcoal.
I know you pros use several at your events but is there something that's an all-in-one?
TIA |

| Just a couple question first...what size half hog are you considering, weight wise? Do you have a size limitation? and what price range are you looking at since this dictates your options? Seth |

| Not sure about the size of the hog. Just going by some of the pig pickings I've been to. My guess 50 - 60 lbs. for half a hog.
The pig pickings I attended were usually just a pit made of concrete block with a grate, no cover and were large enough to do a whole hog with room left over.
As far as price, I have no idea. Probably in the $2K range. I know I'm definitely not looking to buy a $6K Jambo and I'm not really looking for a trailer mounted rig, but that would be a plus. I have looked online at Tejas cookers but not sure how much space is needed to do a half hog. They have some good features but Texas is a long way to go to buy a grill. I'd rather buy local if possible.
My thinking is a horizontal smoker with a smoke box that can be fueled by gas, charcoal or wood or any combination. I would think a 36 x 48 cooking surface would be enough for a half hog, chickens, burgers, steaks, etc. Ideally, it would have burners/grates/ash pan under the main cooking surface for grilling.
I haven't found this grill but was hoping some of you in your travels my have seen something like this.
Thanks,
Eddie |

| This one is primarily gas with a large tray above the burner to act as a heat ballast and holds wood and charcoal. I use gas, to some of my compatriots shagrin, I selected this as primary. John Haney is really good at building pit such as this that have different fuel capabilities. I'm thnking about purchasing one of his charcoal "Chubby" to replace my offset stick burner. Modifications are best address by the builder...John. Hope this helps, Seth |
